Chapter 5

From her bedroom window, Princess Half Moon can watch the birds coming and going to the tree branch of the Large Oak Tree in the yard. The birds would fly to and from so quickly and never stay long enough on a branch so the children could get a good look at them. Snake Eye had an idea to hang a birdfeeder from the branch and then they could watch the birds longer. They found a birdfeeder in the basement and they filled it up with seeds and peanut butter. Birds love to eat peanut butter. Snake Eye climbed the tree and tied the feeder to a sturdy branch. Soon more and more birds came to eat and they stayed longer and longer. Princess Half Moon whistled a bird song and she named the one little bluebird, that noticed, Chico. Chico came every day and Princess Half Moon made sure that the birdfeeder was always full of food. Snake Eye always made sure the rope holding the birdfeeder had a good knot so as to keep it in the tree.

Chapter 4

Queen Chickapee lives across the river from The Highlands. Sometimes, Princess Half Moon spends the night at Queen Chickapee's house. One of those times, at breakfast, there was no milk, so she and Queen Chickapee put on their walking shoes and headed down the road to the neighbor's place, Eve's DairyAcre Farms. Eve sells milk and eggs and cheese there. She also keeps pet fish in a small, clear pond. They are very pretty fish, with orange and black spots on their backs. Princess Half Moon visited the fish, while Queen Chickapee paid for the milk. The biggest fish of all came right up to her face and said, "Hello, little girl. How are you?" That night, Princess Half Moon told her mother, Mommy Butterfly, that she was talking with fishes that morning. Mommy Butterfly clapped her hands and cried, "How wonderful!"

Chapter 3

On Saturday, Princess Half Moon had a visitor. It was her cousin, Wilver. Wilver lives in the Old West and he rode his stick horse all the way from there to The Highlands. Wilver always wears his cowboy hat and his chaps. He wears those to keep the sticky brambles from grabbing his dungarees and scratching up his cowboy boots. He, Princess Half Moon and Snake Eye spent the whole visit riding their stick horses all through the woods looking for cattle rustlers and rattlesnakes. He taught Princess Half Moon how to rope a bull. Her dog, Clyde, had to pretend to be the bull. They galloped and whooped "Yippee Ti Yi Yo" and they ate beans for dinner. At night, they slept on the living room floor in sleeping bags and Wilver showed Snake Eye how to howl like a coyote. Wilver sure is a fun cousin!

Chapter 2

One night, Snake Eye and Princess Half Moon were in their beds. They were just going to sleep when their Grandfather, Chief Tiger Claw, came into their room. "Wake up," he whispered. "There is something I want you to see." The children climbed out of bed, still in their pajamas, and they all walked together down the twisty, turney road. It was very dark and Princess Half Moon was scared. "Don't worry," said Snake Eye. "Just hold my hand." So she did. Grandfather said, "We have to go to a place where the sky is big. There are too many trees, near the house, to see the whole sky." They came to the end of the road where a large open field opened up the whole sky above them. "Now, look up," said Chief Tiger Claw. The night sky above was filled with all the stars of the Universe, twinkling and winking. It was amazing. They all stood for a long time, quietly holding hands and feeling happy to see the diamonds in the sky.

Chapter 1

Princess Half Moon lives across the Great River, in a house at the end of a twisty, turney road that goes up the side of a mountain. There is a forest around her house and she loves to walk in the wood. Sometimes, she takes her dog, Clyde, with her and she picks up acorn hats to make whistles for her brother, Snake Eye. Clyde likes to sniff for rabbits. Princess Half Moon learned to make acorn whistles from her grandmother, Queen Chickapee. Princess Half Moon is a good sister.
